“Before I became a believer, I didn’t know the Bible existed at all. After accepting the faith, I really wanted to have a Bible because I was eager to learn more about God's Word.” Gao Youju, Chongqing, China.
CHONGQING, China – Gao Youju, a hardworking woman from Dahe Village, has lived most of her life without any religious beliefs. Her days have been filled with the routine of rural life, from farming to household chores. Despite her active lifestyle, something seemed missing, a void she couldn’t quite understand.
In 2013, at the age of 70, a sister-in-Christ visiting the village shared the gospel with her. Initially sceptical, Gao questioned everything - from the legality of Christianity to its logic. But the sister’s unwavering patience and love began to chip away at her doubts. Gradually, the message of repentance, love, and unity resonated deeply, stirring something within her that she hasn’t realised was missing.
Embracing Faith and Receiving God's Word
After much contemplation and several conversations, Gao committed her life to Christ. Over the next decade, she experienced the peace and protection that only God could provide. Even at 81, she remained active - farming, chopping wood, and living out her faith, which has become her source of strength and resilience.
But there was one thing Gao deeply longed for - her own Bible to deepen her understanding of God’s Word. Her prayers for this precious gift were answered when her local church, supported by the United Bible Societies, provided her with a large-print Bible. Overjoyed, she held it with gratitude, knowing it was more than just a book - it was a symbol of God’s presence and guidance in her life.
The Impact of the Word
From the moment she opened her Bible, Gao was captivated. Reading about the life and sacrifices of Jesus, she felt an overwhelming sense of love and humility. The teachings of Christ, especially His message of love and sacrifice, moved her deeply. She found comfort and inspiration in God’s Word, which guided her daily life and interactions with others.
One of the most challenging times in Gao’s life was dealing with her youngest son’s divorce. Her son and daughter-in-law, both in their fifties, decided to separate, leaving their family in turmoil. Despite the heartache and helplessness Gao felt, she found strength in her faith. She often prayed for them, asking God to bring peace and reconciliation. The Bible taught her to endure with love and seek harmony, even in difficult circumstances.

Transformation Through God’s Word
Gao’s life transformed remarkably after receiving her large-print Bible. Her daily routine now includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word. This practice provides her with wisdom and patience, especially in dealing with her divorced daughter-in-law. Gao’s approach to conflicts changed; she chooses prayer and peaceful resolutions over arguments and strife. The Bible’s teachings on love, humility, and kindness are her guiding principles.
Her family and neighbours noticed the change in Gao’s demeanour. Once known for her straightforwardness, Gao now exhibits a gentle and patient spirit. She takes the initiative to reconcile with neighbours and avoids dwelling on minor disputes. Her transformation is a testament to the power of God’s Word in her life.
A Testament to Faith
Gao’s large-print Bible not only deepens her understanding of God but also enriches her relationships. “Without the Bible and God’s Word, my life would be completely different. The Bible contains many life-changing principles, and unless you engage with it, you’ll never fully grasp them. For instance, ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ is something I’m still learning.”
Looking back, Gao recognises the profound impact the Bible has on her. It brings her peace, endurance, and the ability to love others unconditionally. To her, the Bible is more than just a book — it is a life-changing guide that draws her closer to God and transforms her from within.
Indeed, Gao’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of God’s Word. From scepticism to faith, her large-print Bible has become a source of strength, guiding her through life’s challenges. Her testimony reminds us of the impact of our Bible mission - each Bible distributed can change lives and bring people closer to God.
